FAQs ABOUT BALI
The Balinese represent only one of over 500 different ethnic groups
in the Indonesian archipelago. The majority practice a unique form of
Hinduism called Agama Tirtha ("Religion of the Holy Waters"),
a combination of Hindu, Buddhist and indigenous religious customs. Although
Bahasa Indonesia is the national language, most Balinese speak a local
dialect - one of over 350 languages and dialects spoken in Indonesia
- among themselves. English is common in tourist areas.
Climate
Hot and humid, but tempered by cool ocean breezes. "Rainy season"
roughly from November until April and is the most humid time of year.
"Dry season" is between May and October. Temperature at sea
level ranges from 26-32° C (79-90° F). Indonesia lies in "the
doldrums", it is typhoon-free.
What to Wear
Casual resort wear is acceptable in practically all tourist areas, and
swimwear should be confined to beaches and swimming pools.
Time Zone
Bali follows one of three time zones in Indonesia and is 8 hours ahead
of Greenwich Mean Tim. It is on the same time zone as Singapore and
Hong Kong.
Money Matters
The currency in Bali is Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). As exchange rates fluctuate
it is advisable to check rates prior to departure from your home country.
Major credit cards and travelers checks are accepted at large hotels
and restaurants, but outside tourist areas IDR are required and it is
advisable to carry small bills. There are automatic teller machines
(ATMs) in major tourist areas.
Money changers are readily available throughout tourist areas.

Usually 220 volts, 50 cycles. The plug is two-pronged, round.
Customs
On entry, 2 liters of alcoholic beverages, 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars
or 100 grams of tobacco are allowed.
