The sulphuric lake reflects eerie colours
Perched at the edge of the rainforest of Ijen National Park and overlooking terraced rice fields to a row of volcanoes, each of Ijen Resort's 30 rooms boasts superb views from their spacious bedrooms and balconies. Bungalows with standard, superior and suite accommodations, all with modern bath facilities including hot water, are arranged throughout the hotels 40,000 square meter garden teeming with local flowers and fruit trees with a mountain spring water swimming pool at the center, surrounded by a vast lotus pond. The 360 panoramic vista of mountains, forest and field includes views across the Bali Strait to the Island of the Gods. As sunshine burns away the mountain mist, four volcanic peaks loom, a thick fur of rainforest coating their flanks. Mount Ijen is famed for the sulphur-rich crater lake at its summit. Ijen Resort and Villas can arrange your one hour ride through coffee plantations and the rainforest via four-wheel drive vehicle to begin the 90 minute hike along a shaded path to Ijen Crater. Along the smoky lake shore, you will see miners load bright yellow sulphur ore into bamboo baskets and carry loads of 80 kilos or more out of the bottom of the crater. The mix of colors, shadow and sun create an apocalyptic scene, like something from the moon or an ancient legend. It is an unforgettable experience.
